MIDDLE AGES, RENAISSANCE, AND REFORMATION UNIT STUDY

Objectives: To discover the art, literature, and science of the time period, and to relate these to our lives now. To learn about the development of the church and the great men who helped bring about the changes we now enjoy as Christians.

This unit is based on the book Adam of the Road, but includes sources found on the web and resources easily found at home or in your library.

The student will need to maintain a binder for this unit. The binder will be divided into the following categories: Language Arts, Science, History/Geography, Math, and Summaries/Special Projects. Each week of the unit, the materials will be printed out, hole-punched, and inserted into the proper division in the binder. The student will also need loose-leaf notebook paper for writing, and/or access to the computer.

Some downloads are used, such as for the map puzzle games, critical thinking games, and social studies games. Also, a number of PDFs are used as well as Word documents, to enhance the learning adventure. PDFs and Word documents are included in the materials, though they can be found easily on the web by following the links below. Due to size, you will probably want to download the programs yourself. Things I have written myself will have download links so that you can download them in Word format or as jpegs. I hope eventually to be able to also put them in PDF.

While many free resources can be found on the web, it really depends on how deeply you want to go in this unit. We are using Matin Latin and some Spanish for part of our Language Arts.

Following is a list of sources for downloads and resources:

Books and supplies you will want to have on hand:
  • Adam of the Road
  • A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
  • Selected poems: The Tiger by William Blake; Crossing the Bar by Alfred, Lord Tennyson; Batter My Heart by John Donne; The Pulley by George Herbert; God's Grandeur by Gerard Manley Hopkins. We used Western Literature - Second Edition, published by McGraw-Hill [©1973] for these and included the questions at the end of the section entitled "Discovery Through Belief". This is a twelfth grade literature book.
  • An encyclopedia, either hard copy or computer.
  • A Bible.
  • A concordance.
  • A good dictionary. (We prefer Noah Webster's 1828.)
  • A daily devotional guide appropriate to your family.
  • A book or software that gives the biographies of church heroes.
  • A three-ring binder, preferably 2 inches thick.
  • Construction paper, scissors, and glue.
  • Clip art for the timeline. Or, your child can draw his own images.
  • Hymn book or source for hymns.

Assessment:
  • Use any method you prefer to assess your child's progress. This is really up to you.
  • We write summaries to finish off each week. If you wish, substitute oral reports, skits or plays, poetic works, original songs, poster or bulletin board projects, or dioramas.

2 Timothy 2:15-16, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness."
